Nationalism is a person’s loyalty (#) and devotion (#) to their nation. Another definition of Nationalism is a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others, and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups. ("nationalism.")

Many citizens have forgotten what Nationalism is. Many citizens will voice their opposition to what our government is doing, and where we have our troops.

“Nationalism unites people of different classes and ideologies. It can create harmony, link our past to our present and give a people a sense of identity. But nationalism is also a tool used by dictators, despots and power-hungry politicians alike. It can create violent and mighty forces as well as divide people from different geographies. It is used to exaggerate differences, foster generalizations and cause discriminatory thinking. These two halves of nationalism can perhaps best be viewed in the context of World War II. Churchill, Roosevelt and King used nationalism to unite their nations against brutal enemies for the preservation of democratic civilization. Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo exploited nationalism to fuel an expansionist voracity the likes of which the world had never seen before. Therefore, we observe from history that nationalism can be a force for self-preservation, heroism and honor, or for vengeance, conquest, enslavement and dishonor." (Jonathan Wheelwright, United North America)

In America, citizens show nationalism by supporting our countries troops that fight for our way of life, in the U.S. and overseas. Some citizens in America show their Nationalism by hanging an American flag on their house. Nationalism is much like Patriotism, which is love and loyalty to ones country. Around Billings, many citizens show Nationalism by putting the “support our troops” magnets on their vehicles. Another way citizens can show Nationalism in Billings is by signing up for the National Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Not all citizens do this but some do. This may be the ultimate way of showing Nationalism to the United States. To fight for our country and our ways of life and freedoms. Another form of Nationalism citizens can do in Billings is giving time, money, and food to the homeless and the needy. By giving these things, citizens are making the community better, which can make the country better, by the citizens helping out people in need. Some other examples of Nationalism in Billings and in the U.S. are holidays. Independence Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day are all examples of Nationalism celebrated nation wide in the U.S. These holidays are supposed to bring Americans together. As Americans we should all be loyal and proud of our country.

If citizens do not have a sense of pride and loyalty for their country, then a country will not prosper. If citizens are though, then the country will grow in many aspects, and will always have citizens to defend it.
